Grid size that is.

The idea of having the largest grid possible is very exciting. Forty three cars in the draft at Daytona or 30 Dirt Late Models flying through the mud at Eldora sounds awesome. It really does.

My feeling has always been that the larger the grid, the more special the race can be. Problem is... the quality of racing isn't always as good as the idea. It is with that knowledge that we have established our "Maximum Grid Sizes" for 2018.

Road Endurance = 60 NASCAR = 30 Indycar = 30

V8 Supercar = 30

Short track oval = 20

F1 = 20

Dirt Oval = 15

We believe that an appropriate number of drivers on the grid, combined with the licensing system will have a very positive impact on just how clean the races can be.


Clean racing, while still actually racing... that is the goal. There is a fine line between pushing your car to its maximum level and wrecking out... sometimes you have to find the tow hook before you can find victory lane.

For us the rules and regulations are no different. It is easy to create a rules structure that is either too loose, or too rigid and frankly we have done both. Live officials, in race penalties, post race reviews, post race penalties, incident caps and CPI (corners per incident) calculations are all things we have done in an effort to find that "balance" between racing hard and racing clean.

To be honest, I don't think it's something we can ever get perfect, but that is the goal and one we will continue to pursue.

It is in that effort that we announce the 2018 Licensing System.

There are two types of licenses in the Majors Series; a "Series License" and a "Pro License". A Series License is required to be able to race in any of the regular season, special or post season events. A Pro Licence is required to be eligible for the Pro Split. (Having a Pro License doesn't guarantee a spot in the Pro Split)

Your license level is based on your "Modified Corners Per Incident" or MCPI. CPI is calculated by dividing the sum of all corners completed in Majors race sessions by the number of incidents recorded by iRacing during those sessions.

Your CPI is then modified by factoring in “penalty points”. Below are the penalties points that can be added to a licence.

Penalty Points

5x - Minor incident

5x - Chat abuse

5x - Frivolous protest (the 5x goes against the protester)

5x - Wrong Number in Race Session

10x - Major incident

20x + DQ - Intentional Contact

MCPI License Thresholds

Pro - 50 Series - 30

Officials will not be reviewing all incidents via a post race review, so penalty points will be levied primarily as the result of a protest.

We will have in race officials in the Pro Split, but for consistency's sake their role is mostly that of peace keeper. They can mute chat, they can red flag an event they can throw an additional yellow to sort out a restart, but will mostly be in the background and will not levy penalties in real time.

All drivers will start the 2018 season with a clean MCPI and will be eligible for the Pro split of the first race of the season. MCPI will be calculated after each race and published on the Majors website. Any driver whose MCPI is below 30 for two consecutive races will be put on probation. If the driver’s MCPI is below 30 in the probationary race they will be suspended for 1 race.
